The Nutcracker Ballet
The Story
The Nutcracker Ballet, a world famous story that has not only stood the test of time, but also grown with it. The Nutcracker Ballet is based on the story “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice” written by E.T.A. Hoffman and set to music by the legendary Peter Tschaikovsky. It is a magical tale that has delighted children and adults alike for generations with its celebration of dance choreographed to some of the most familiar music of all time. Although what is seen on the stage these days is different in detail from the original story, the basic plot remains the same; the story of a young German girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King. As the story unravels, the audience is propelled into the world of the young Nutcracker and his quest to conquer his adversaries, win the heart of the discerning maiden and persevere against all odds in the most majestic and magical manner.
The Company
The Rostov State Ballet
One of the youngest professional ballets in
Russia, the Rostov State Musical Theatre Ballet

choreographer, Oleg Korzenkov, to become the first
ballet-master of the theatre. In September 2002 a
choreography faculty was established by the company

The Music
The music in Tchaikovsky’s ballet is some of the composer’s most admired. It belongs to the Romantic tradition and contains some of his most memorable melodies, which are instantly recognizable. The Russian Dance is one of the most familiar pieces in ballet, along with the famous Waltz of the Sugar-Plum Fairy. Typical to Tchaikovsky, the music contains lush late-romantic harmonies with a Russian flavour, and in many places, an intense emotionalism.
